Wayne, a brother from Texas who lives here, loves to go exploring around the area. One of his favourite trips is to Zuleta a small vllage, about a 2 hour drive up into the mountains. We packed lunches and brought plenty of water. Zuleta is 10,000 feet elevation, 2,000 more than Cotacahi, it's easy to dehydrate when hiking in the hills.
We started the morning with an 8 a.m. breakfast in Cotacachi. Morra (above) is a healthy berry juice drink.
Wayne, our guide and driver.
Wayne said the first thing you do when heading up into the mountains is fill your tank with gas!
Wasn't long before the roads went from asphalt to cobblestone then to rocky dirt. Not much more than 1 lane wide on the edge of cliffs means meeting up with another car is tricky.
Some older houses made of mud walls.
Touring the mountains by bike.
First stop was to a renowned wood carver, Carlos Sandoval in Zuleta.
Much of Carlos' work starts with tree logs and are rough hewn with a chain saw. This is one of his workers.
Some of his creations.
Not sure what this is?
On the yard tour we discover water buffalo.
Some work gets fired in this kiln.
Carlos has been commisioned to do a wood creation project in Montreal and is travelling there this July.
Workshop and yard - like stepping back in time.
Wayne bought a hat tree.

Carlos and his wife. When it was time to say goodbye, a group photo.
